The contest winner was a little too revved-up - Tampa-based consultant Gabe Hobbs says "At the time, I was the program director at CHR 99.5/WKDQ in Evansville. We were doing our big Spring book car giveaway with a local Lincoln-Mercury dealership. We did the usual methodology of giving away 99 keys, one of which would start the car at a live broadcast from the dealership on a Saturday afternoon. A young lady had the winning key and was extremely excited, jumping up and down and providing that great promo audio you always hope you’ll be able to capture. She was so excited, she wanted to take the car for a spin around the block. When she reached an intersection just down the street, she unfortunately had an accident. She was not injured but she totaled the car, which she had owned for literally a few minutes. However, she had great insurance and they promptly wrote her a check for the full replacement value. She loved the car so much, she went back to the dealership and purchased the identical car. So the dealership received full promotional value, as did WKDQ. Plus the dealership had sold the same car to the young lady for full sticker value, cash on the spot. Needless to say, the dealership was ecstatic. You couldn’t write a better script for all involved – other than perhaps State Farm Insurance." Got your own true story? Email “You Can’t Make This Up” – Tom@RTK-Media.com.
